THE USE OF SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS FOR THE STUDY OF LEARNING

Social network analysis can be use to study the effectiveness of learning designs. Analysis can be done on centrality, associations, and direction of interactivity. This can yield useful information such as

  • who is talking to who (student-student interactions)
  • Who is the dominant student in discussion groups.
  • Who is the least connected student or isolated student.
  • Whether information from student-student interaction is one way or bi-directional. That is, if one student is sending information to all the others or there is actual communication between them.
  • interactions between instructor and students
  • frequency of interactions and its duration.
  • time spent on the course materials such as lecture videos, quizzes, etc.
With this information, the instructor can reach out to those who are isolated or modified the learning design to make it more inclusive and accommodating.
